Guelph: May 4-6, 2017

Preparations are underway for the 2017 CUBA conference – we are excited to welcome you to beautiful Guelph, Ontario!

The theme for this year’s conference  is “‘Because it’s 2017’: Cultivating Diversity and Inclusion in University Governance”.

Two outstanding key note addresses will kick off the conference:

Award winning author Lawrence Hill, author of “Blackberry Sweet Juice”, “The Illegal”, and “The Book of Negroes”, will deliver a keynote address exploring themes of diversity and inclusion.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde will deliver a keynote address on Truth and Reconciliation: Recommendations to Universities.

Panels and sessions that follow will include practical ways for Boards and Secretariats to put these important themes into action in university governance

In addition to the keynote theme,  sessions will be offered on another timely topic: supporting Presidential transitions.  Transitions at the senior level offer significant opportunities for universities, but come with a corresponding level of risk. Recent sector events have demonstrated that smooth transitions are key. Sessions on Saturday include panels on presidential transitions both from a Board’s perspective – and from a president’s. Join us for discussions on these timely topics.

Please note that the main conference will take place on Friday, May 5th and Saturday, May 6th, with the pre-conference professional development day for board professionals on Thursday, May 4th.

The first part of the professional development day on May 4th will provide an opportunity for governance professionals to participate in a review of guidance about a board’s role in a crisis on campus and an associated case exercise.  The afternoon will be devoted to discussion of ‘getting back to governing’, table topics and engaging Gen Z.

Thursday, May 4th, will also feature the Conference Opening Reception.
